By Ms. Marci
February 2014

You may have noticed a similarity in the name of this artist. To answer the obvious question right away, no, it's not me! It is because of the similarity in our names, though, that this woman came to my attention. Allow me to indulge myself.

Some of you may know that I am a singer/songwriter, bassist. A fan of mine was searching on the internet to find out where and when I was playing when they came across "Miss Marcy's" name. The next time this fan of mine came to see me, he asked if I had been playing in Texas. This question sent me to the internet to find out who "Miss Marcy" was. I contacted her via email and we've been in touch ever since. When I got word, via email, that she was releasing her second CD, I asked her to send one to me.

Miss Marcy (Rodsky) penned all of the seven cuts on this CD, two of which were co-written by Dave Burris, who also plays guitar. From the beginning of this disc, you know you'll be listening to pure blues. Even without a drawl, Miss Rodsky's voice has a Texas quality that seasons this recording just right!

Cut one, “Stand By Your Man,” co-written by Burris, is nothing like its more well-known namesake. It's raw blues! It's embellished with some fine blues harmonica playing by New England blues legend, Cheryl Arena.

Track two, “OC Blues,” comes in swinging, then track three, “You Got My Man,” drops into the lowdown lament of a lover scorned. The fourth cut, “Move On,” begins with Miss Marcy playing the piano and singing. The acoustics are primitive in the first verse. Then, as the second verse kicks in, the band does, too! I like the way she ends this song the way it began, with just the piano playing acoustically, then the sound of high heels walking away and the door slamming!

Cut five, “One More Man,” slips sweetly into a country-blues ballad co-penned again with Burris. Then, in cut six, she struts into a Texas country-blues groove in “Restraining Order.”

This disc is capped off with her up-tempo signature tune, “Sugar Daddy.” It's set aside from previous tunes with a snappy, jazzy intro complete with guitar strumming, stops and horns punctuating Miss Marcy's vocals. The lyrics are sassy..."Yes, my love is true, as long as my checks be comin' through! Ya know I'll call ya, sugar daddy."

With the longest song on this recording being 3:57 minutes and only seven cuts, my biggest complaint about this CD is that it isn't long enough.

You can buy Miss Marcy on CD Baby. ed: or just click on the photo ablum to buy at Amazon

The blues sound of Miss Marcy and her Texas SugarDaddys is unconventional. It swings a little harder and faster than does the work of some of her contemporaries in the genre. She's an energetic performer, capable of commanding a loud bar filled with strangers and a quiet theater of fans with equal shimmering confidence. KM

On the evening of January 25, 2011, Dallas’ best jazz and blues artists united at the Brooklyn Jazz Café to honor legendary singer Ms. Etta James, on her 73rd birthday.

The Dallas lineup included an appearance by Grammy nominated blues artist Mr. Lucky Peterson (multi-instrumentalist), Grammy nominated Ms. Breggett Rideau (vocalist), Martha Burks (vocalist), Candy Williams (vocalist), Liz Mikel (vocalist), Rob Holbert (saxophonist), Eric Willis (composer and keyboardist), Derrick ‘Domino’ Winding (guitarist), Andrea Dawson (vocalist), Naida and Nelda Washington (vocalists) and many more.

Etta James was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2009, and has been suffering from dementia. However, it was also just recently confirmed that Etta James is severely ill with leukemia.

Etta James (born Jamesetta Hawkins) is best known for her success as a blues and R&B singer. However, she also sings rock, gospel, and jazz. James has won four Grammys and seventeen Blues Music Awards during her music career. She was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, the Blues Hall of Fame in 2001, and the Grammy Hall of Fame in both 1999 and 2008. James is most commonly known for her signature songs “At Last” and “Trust in Me”, which were hits recorded in 1961 with Chess Records.

The idea of honoring Ms. Etta James on her birthday, originated from Jazz vocalist Ms. Loretta Dunaway. Ms. Breggett Rideau produced the event, and teamed up with music composer and keyboardist Mr. Norman Williams, who wrote the music charts, and served as the music director. Brooklyn Jazz Café owner Mrs. Lorna Tate supported these artists with no hesitation and hosted this local tribute, which she said “brought me to tears”.

The evening started with a stellar performance by jazz vocalist Ms. Martha Burks. Her powerful vocal range and playful finesse was given a standing ovation after performing Etta’s famous song ‘At Last’. Ms. Liz Mikel beautifully sang James’ second 1961 hit song, ‘Trust in Me’ and Ms. Candy Williams the classic jazz standard, ‘Sunday Kind of Love’.

Upcoming jazz vocalist Ms. Nelda Washington, shimmed her hips and rocked the audience with a touch of jazz, when she performed the blues hit, ‘Hoochie Coochie Man’. Then, blues singer Ms. Andrea Dawson captured the audience’s undivided attention, when she illustrated the emotional lyrics from the song ‘I’d Rather Go Blind’. Dawson walked off the stage and down the aisles singing to the audience, “I’d rather go blind boy. Then to see you walk away, see you walk from me, yeah…” giving us a memorable performance. Another, evening highlight was when Mr. Lucky Peterson stopped the band to rejoined the stage, and took the guitar from player (Derrick ‘Domino’ Winding), and lead the band playing the blues hit ‘Confessin The Blues’ featuring Miss Marcy on vocals. Mr. Peterson has performed and recorded with Ms. Etta James and many other famous artists all over the world for years. Peterson’s talented performance and rare appearance made this an unforgettable event.

The legendary Etta James and her family are in our prayers here in Dallas. We will honor her always…

A song I wrote about an old bass player of mine who is real young and good looking. Sometimes his women would all show up on the same gig and fight to see who got to take him home. I would just think... for a couch and a car, you can have him too. If you don't give him what he wants, the other will... You better stan...d by your man or another woman will come along who can, stand by your man.

Here's the deal, Dallas: Considering how important a role the blues played in our city's musical history (y'know, "Deep Ellum Blues," and all that), it's really a goddamn shame how there aren't all that many clubs—well, many clubs worth mentioning, at least—that offer up the genre on a regular basis. Last we heard, there's one coming back to Deep Ellum, thank you very much, in the spot behind the Twisted Root, right where the Red Blood Club used to be. But for the time being, may we recommend the Pearl for your misery-loves-company ways? Located on the east edge of downtown, it's close to our city's historical blues home in Deep Ellum, and with touring and local blues performers coming in on a regular basis—including a Monday happy hour residency from Miss Marcy and her Texas Sugar Daddies—along with a slew of jazz and folk artists, it's the only place we can look you straight in the eye and offer up as a cure for your Lack of Deep Ellum blues blues.

If you haven’t heard Miss Marcy’s sultry vocals, you’re in for a real treat. Marcy is one heck of an entertainer and for these two engagements she'll bring her full Sugar Daddy band to spice things up. She puts so much energy into her performance that we may go "lights out" as she lights up the stage. Her brand of smokin blues will make you smile, just like our great selection of Vietnamese dishes and Happy Hour prices. Don't Miss IT!

University of North Texas grad Miss Marcy is a self-proclaimed "bar singer," which means her jazz/blues music goes great with whiskey and a smoky, darkly-lit watering hole. Well, the smoky part might not be realistic right now, but thank God the whiskey still is, and Miss Marcy's great songs like "Sugar Daddy" and "You Got My Man" make us want to go listen to her live, right now. Do it every Monday night in April at the Pearl and step back into another era. 6:30–8pm. Pearl, 2038 Commerce St. 214-655-8824. www.missmarcy.com.

Who's making love to your old lady, while you were out making love?
We'll tell ya!
KNON 89.3 fm or online www.knon.org
Blue Lisa, Andrea Dawson, Cheryl Arena, and Miss Marcy will be
violating the airwaves this Thursday morning from 9am-12pm on KNON
89.3 fm. We're meeting for mimosas before the show to help inspire
us with a theme. As it is, we thought we would girl-gossip about all
the Dallas musicians and ruin some reputations. Ain't nobody can tell
a story like 4 drunken Blues Gals with a microphone and a grudge!

Since 2001, 13 men have been exonerated in Dallas County after DNA testing conclusively proved their innocence. The proceeds of DNA Blues Ball ticket and merchandise sales will directly support the efforts of the Innocence Project of Texas in our mission to seek justice for those who have lost their freedom at the hands of wrongful convictions.

Are you originally from Dallas? I was born here, moved away, and now I’m back.
How long have you been singing? I started at blues musician Hashbrown’s jam at Lakewood Bar and Grill and the old Schooner’s 10 years ago. I’ve had my own band, Miss Marcy and Her Texas Sugardaddys, for a couple of years now.
How did you get started as a singer/songwriter? I’d been playing the DFW circuit for a while and Don O., Friday DJ for KNON 89.3 FM, said I could be included on the KNON 89.3 FM Texas Blues Vol. 4 CD if I had an original tune. So, I wrote the song “SugarDaddy” and asked my friends to record it with me.
What music or musicians inspire you? Traditional blues and Texas country are what I dig. I like grassroots music. The musicians that inspire me most are Hashbrown and the late, great Sam Myers.
Why the blues? Because it’s real. You don’t need a degree, an attitude, or an electrical outlet. Just some whiskey and soul.
Do you play any instruments? I play the piano badly.
What’s the most incredible life experience you have had so far? Both of my original tunes, “SugarDaddy” and “Restraining Order,” advanced to the next round in their respective categories in the 2006 International Songwriting Competition.
What’s the best thing about your job? It doesn’t feel like a job.
What are your favorite Lakewood hangouts? The Balcony Club, La Parrillada, Lakewood Bar and Grill, Scalini’s Pizza and Pasta, The Cock and Bull, and Lakewood Library
Favorite guilty pleasure? Going into Chocolate Secrets and pretending to be purchasing a large order just so I can feast on the chocolate samples.
When you’re not working, what do you do? Support live music in Dallas

All your cool friends are there! It's a musicians kinda joint. The house was packed and the beer was cold. Pearl is Dallas' most talked about venue for live music.

I got some good news today......
We are pleased to inform you that the song "Sugar Daddy," entered into the Blues category, has advanced to the next round of judging for the 2006 International Songwriting Competition. With over 14,000 songs entered into ISC 2006, making it this far along in the competition is a great accomplishment and a testament to your songwriting talent. Feel free to tell others the good news about your song! When publicizing your achievement, you may mention that your song has "advanced to the next round of judging in the 2006 International Songwriting Competition." Congratulations Hashbrown, Mike Garvey, Linkon Apeland, Freddie Jones, and Mark Gulley. Also, my honky-tonk tune “Restraining Order” made it to the next round in the country category. Congratulations Bill Campbell, Dave Burris, Earl Darling, and Aaron Wynne.

It will always be 'the Biskit' to me!!! The audiences mourned Sam. Several bands paid tribute to him with their music and even sacrificed their stage time to have a moment of silence for him. Glad I got to be there to see him last year. The town museum has his red suit pressed and hanging in a glass case along with his harmonicas. Funny, when we spoke to the curator whom Joanna gave the suit, he said "That suit had to be dry cleaned twice. Did he have cats?"

As ya'll may have heard by now, my good friend, Daddy, and all around hero passed away on Monday. The funeral was Friday and we take him home to Mississippi tonight to be buried with his family. I loved him dearly, just as much as any of us here in Dallas. I wouldn't dare say "more" because we all loved him profoundly. The funeral service was beautiful........it was the "Who's Who" of the Dallas underground. We are all going to miss you terribly. You made us a family. I have spent more time with Sam and the Boys in the last ten years than I have with my own family. I will miss all your funny little ways Sam. I love you. Thank you for being so good to me. Your girls are taking you home.
